Yale-trained, board-certified periodontist Dr. Chanook David Ahn provides consultations in Anaheim and advanced gum treatment at our Costa Mesa flagship
Periodontal disease affects nearly half of American adults over the age of 30, yet most people who have it do not know until significant damage has already occurred. At The Loft Dental Studio, Anaheim patients now have convenient access to a board-certified periodontist right in their neighborhood. Dr. Chanook David Ahn, who completed his periodontal residency at Yale University and holds board certification from the American Board of Periodontology, provides periodontal consultations and evaluations at our Anaheim office at 1007 W La Palma Ave, Suite 5.
Our Anaheim office operates on a model we call "convenient consultation, specialist treatment." Periodontal evaluations, gum health assessments, treatment planning, and follow-up visits take place at our Anaheim location, keeping routine care close to home for patients in Anaheim, Fullerton, Buena Park, and the surrounding North Orange County communities. When advanced periodontal procedures are needed, such as LANAP laser therapy, gum surgery, dental implant placement, bone grafting, or sedation dentistry, patients are treated at our fully equipped Costa Mesa flagship at 3151 Airway Ave, Suite F-103, Costa Mesa, CA 92626.
This two-location approach means you never have to wait weeks for a referral to an outside specialist. Your periodontist is part of the same practice, has access to your complete records, and coordinates directly with our general dentist and prosthodontist. The result is faster diagnosis, seamless treatment, and continuity of care from start to finish.

Periodontal disease, commonly called gum disease, is a chronic bacterial infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It begins as gingivitis, the mildest form, characterized by red, swollen gums that bleed easily during brushing or flossing. Left untreated, gingivitis progresses to periodontitis, where the infection spreads below the gum line, destroying the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place. Advanced periodontitis is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.
Warning signs of periodontal disease include gums that bleed when you brush or floss, persistent bad breath, receding gums that make teeth appear longer, loose or shifting teeth, changes in how your teeth fit together when you bite, and pus between your teeth and gums. If you notice any of these symptoms, scheduling a periodontal evaluation at our Anaheim office is an important first step. Early detection and treatment can halt the progression of the disease and prevent irreversible damage.
During your periodontal consultation in Anaheim, Dr. Ahn performs a thorough evaluation that includes measuring the depth of the pockets between your teeth and gums, assessing gum recession and tissue health, reviewing digital X-rays for signs of bone loss, and evaluating risk factors such as smoking, diabetes, and family history. Based on these findings, he develops a personalized treatment plan that addresses the severity and extent of your condition.
For early to moderate periodontal disease, scaling and root planing is the first line of treatment. This non-surgical procedure removes bacterial plaque and calculus (tarite) from below the gum line and smooths the root surfaces to promote reattachment of healthy gum tissue. Scaling and root planing is available at both our Anaheim and Costa Mesa offices and is often the only treatment needed for patients with early-stage disease. Learn more on our periodontal treatment page.
For moderate to advanced periodontal disease, Dr. Ahn performs LANAP (Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure) at our Costa Mesa flagship. LANAP is an FDA-cleared laser protocol that selectively removes diseased gum tissue and bacteria while leaving healthy tissue intact. The laser energy stimulates the body's natural healing response, promoting regeneration of bone and connective tissue attachment. LANAP offers significant advantages over traditional gum surgery: no cutting, no sutures, faster healing, less post-operative pain, and the ability to save teeth that might otherwise require extraction. Learn more on our LANAP page.
Gum recession exposes tooth roots, increasing sensitivity and vulnerability to decay. Dr. Ahn performs gum grafting procedures at our Costa Mesa office to restore lost gum tissue and protect exposed roots. Connective tissue grafts, free gingival grafts, and tunnel techniques are selected based on the location and severity of recession. Learn more on our gum grafting page.
As a periodontist, Dr. Ahn specializes in the surgical placement of dental implants. His training in bone biology, soft tissue management, and surgical technique makes him ideally qualified for implant placement, including complex cases that require simultaneous bone grafting. Implant surgery is performed at our Costa Mesa flagship, with implant consultations available at the Anaheim office. Dr. Elaine Lu, our board-certified prosthodontist, designs and fits the final implant restoration. Learn more on our dental implants page.
Bone loss from periodontal disease, tooth extraction, or trauma can compromise the foundation for dental implants or threaten the stability of remaining teeth. Dr. Ahn performs bone grafting, guided bone regeneration, sinus floor elevation, and ridge augmentation at our Costa Mesa office. He uses biocompatible graft materials combined with PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin) therapy to accelerate healing and graft integration. Learn more on our bone regeneration page.
Cosmetic gum procedures reshape the gum line to improve the appearance of your smile. Crown lengthening removes excess gum tissue to expose more of the tooth surface, correcting a gummy smile or creating adequate tooth structure for restorations. These procedures are performed at our Costa Mesa flagship, with consultations available in Anaheim.
We designed our two-location model specifically to make periodontal care more accessible to patients in North Orange County. Instead of traveling to Costa Mesa for every appointment, Anaheim patients can complete their initial consultation, evaluation, and treatment planning locally. Only the advanced procedures that require specialized surgical facilities and equipment take place at Costa Mesa.
Here is how the process typically works:
