LANAP Recovery — What to Expect Day by Day

By Dr. Chanook David Ahn, DMD July 16, 2026 6 min read

One of the most common questions I hear from patients considering LANAP laser gum treatment is simply: "What will recovery be like?" It is a fair question, especially if you have heard stories about traditional gum surgery and its longer, more uncomfortable healing period. The good news is that LANAP recovery is significantly easier than conventional periodontal surgery. Here is exactly what to expect, day by day, from someone who performs this procedure every week.

Day of the Procedure

LANAP is performed under local anesthesia in our Costa Mesa office. There is no scalpel, no cutting of tissue, and no sutures. The PerioLase laser selectively targets diseased tissue and bacteria within the periodontal pockets while leaving healthy tissue intact. A typical session takes one to two hours depending on how many areas are being treated.

Because the procedure is minimally invasive, most patients drive themselves home afterward. You will feel numbness from the anesthesia for a few hours, similar to what you would experience after a filling. Once the numbness wears off, you may notice mild soreness in the treated areas, but many patients describe it as far less discomfort than they expected. No prescription pain medication is typically needed.

Days 1 to 3: Mild Soreness, Soft Foods

The first few days after LANAP are the most important for healing. You will likely experience mild to moderate soreness in the treated gums, similar to the feeling after a deep cleaning. Over-the-counter pain medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen is usually sufficient to manage any discomfort.

During this phase, stick to a soft diet. Your gums need time to form a stable blood clot in the treated pockets, and chewing hard or crunchy foods can disrupt that process. Brush your teeth gently, but avoid brushing directly over the treated gum areas for the first few days. I will provide you with a detailed post-operative kit and instructions at your appointment.

Most patients return to work the next day. You will not look or feel like you had surgery. There is no visible swelling, no packing material, and no stitches to worry about.

Days 4 to 7: Soreness Subsides

By the end of the first week, the initial soreness should be fading noticeably. Your gums may appear slightly darker than usual in the treated areas. This is completely normal and is a sign that healing is progressing. The laser creates a natural fibrin clot that seals the pocket, and the tissue color will gradually return to normal.

Continue eating soft foods through the first week. You can begin gentle brushing of the treated areas with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Avoid flossing the treated sites until I clear you at your follow-up visit. Most patients feel close to normal by day five or six.

Weeks 2 to 4: Gums Tighten and Pockets Shrink

This is where you will start to notice real improvement. The gum tissue begins to tighten and reattach to the root surfaces of your teeth. Periodontal pockets that were five, six, or seven millimeters deep start to reduce as the tissue heals and inflammation resolves.

You can gradually return to your normal diet during this period, though I still recommend avoiding extremely hard or sharp foods like nuts, chips, and crusty bread for a few more weeks. I will see you for a follow-up appointment to check healing, measure pocket depths, and make sure everything is progressing as expected.

Months 2 to 6: Bone Regeneration Begins

This is the phase that makes LANAP truly unique among periodontal treatments. Unlike traditional gum surgery, which primarily removes tissue to reduce pocket depth, LANAP has been shown to stimulate new bone growth. The laser creates the conditions for your body to regenerate bone that was lost to periodontal disease.

You will not feel this happening, but follow-up X-rays taken at three to six months often reveal measurable bone fill in areas that were previously compromised. This is one of the key reasons I recommend LANAP for appropriate candidates: it is the only laser periodontal protocol with published, peer-reviewed evidence of true regeneration.

During this phase, you should be maintaining excellent home care and attending your maintenance cleanings every three to four months. These cleanings are critical. Periodontal disease is a chronic condition, and consistent professional maintenance is what keeps it from returning.

6 Months and Beyond: Full Healing

By six months, the healing process is largely complete. Pocket depths should be significantly reduced, gum tissue should be firm and healthy, and bone regeneration should be visible on imaging. At this point, we establish a long-term maintenance schedule, typically cleanings every three to four months, to monitor your periodontal health and catch any recurrence early.

Patients who follow the maintenance protocol consistently have excellent long-term outcomes. LANAP is not a one-time fix. It is the beginning of a managed approach to a chronic disease, and with proper care, the results are durable.

What to Eat During Recovery

Choosing the right foods makes recovery easier and protects the healing tissue. Here are the best options for the first one to two weeks:

Activities to Avoid in the First 48 Hours

To give your gums the best chance to heal properly, avoid the following for the first two days after your procedure:

Key Takeaway

LANAP recovery is significantly faster and more comfortable than traditional gum surgery. Most patients return to work the next day, manage discomfort with over-the-counter medication, and see meaningful improvement within weeks. The real bonus is bone regeneration over the following months, something no other laser protocol has demonstrated with the same level of evidence.
