A periodontist is a dentist who completed three additional years of residency training after dental school, focused exclusively on the gums, bone, and supporting structures of the teeth. We diagnose and treat gum disease, perform gum grafting and bone regeneration, place dental implants, and — most importantly — specialize in saving teeth that might otherwise be lost.

When your general dentist refers you to a periodontist, it usually means they have identified something involving your gums or bone that falls outside the scope of general dental care. That is not a bad sign. It means your dentist is being thorough and wants you to get specialist-level evaluation and treatment where it matters most.

One of the most underrated sources of dental anxiety has nothing to do with teeth. It is the experience of arriving at the appointment itself — circling a parking structure, feeding meters, navigating a sprawling medical plaza, and then sitting in a crowded waiting room wondering when you will be called.

That might sound like a small detail, but patients tell us constantly that it makes a real difference. By the time you sit down in our office, you have not spent fifteen minutes stressed about logistics. You are calm, and that is exactly how we want you to feel.

Check-In and Paperwork

When you arrive, our front desk team will greet you and walk you through any intake forms if you have not already completed them online. We will ask about your medical history, current medications, and dental history. If your general dentist sent X-rays or records ahead of time, we will already have those on file.

We accept most major PPO insurance plans, including Delta Dental, Cigna, MetLife, Guardian, Aetna, UHC, and BCBS. Our team will verify your benefits before your visit whenever possible so there are no surprises about coverage. We are open Monday through Friday from 9:30 AM to 6 PM and Saturday from 9 AM to 4 PM, which gives you flexibility in scheduling your appointment around work or family commitments.

The Comprehensive Periodontal Examination

This is the part that patients are usually most nervous about, so let me be direct: the periodontal exam is not painful. It is thorough, it is methodical, and it gives me the information I need to make an accurate diagnosis — but it is not something you need to fear.

Here is what happens during the exam:

Periodontal Probing

I use a small, calibrated instrument to gently measure the depth of the space between your gums and each tooth. These measurements, called probing depths, tell me whether you have healthy gums (typically 1 to 3 millimeters) or whether gum disease has created deeper pockets where bacteria can accumulate (4 millimeters or more). Most patients describe this as mild pressure — not pain. I measure six sites around every tooth, and the entire process takes about ten minutes. The numbers are recorded digitally in real time so I can show you exactly where any problems exist.

3D CBCT Scan

If indicated, I will take a CBCT scan — a three-dimensional X-ray that lets me see your bone levels, root anatomy, sinus proximity, and any hidden pathology in a way that traditional two-dimensional X-rays simply cannot match. The scan takes about fifteen seconds, involves no discomfort, and produces dramatically more diagnostic information than a standard panoramic X-ray. This technology is one of the reasons a periodontist's evaluation can reveal things that were not visible during your general dentist's exam.

Digital Charting and Clinical Assessment

Throughout the exam, I am also assessing gum recession, tooth mobility, bleeding on probing, the quality and quantity of attached gum tissue, the presence of any furcation involvement on multi-rooted teeth, and your bite relationship. All of this is charted digitally so we have a precise baseline record. If you ever need periodontal treatment, we will use this baseline to measure your progress over time.

The Treatment Discussion: Your Questions Come First

After the examination, I sit down with you and explain everything I found. I show you the probing chart, walk you through the 3D images on a screen, and point out exactly where any problems are and how significant they are. I explain what each finding means in plain language — not clinical jargon designed to confuse or alarm you.

If treatment is needed, I present every available option. For gum disease, that might include scaling and root planing, LANAP laser therapy, or surgical intervention depending on the severity. For other conditions, it might involve gum grafting, bone regeneration, or dental implants. I explain the benefits, risks, timeline, and costs associated with each option so you can make an informed decision.

There is no pressure to commit to anything on the same day. This is your first visit. The purpose is to give you information, not to sell you a treatment plan before you have had time to think about it. Many patients want to discuss their options with a spouse or family member, get a cost estimate from their insurance, or simply take a few days to process what they have learned. That is completely normal and completely fine.
